"Apple varieties notes based on observations recorded by the writer H.P. Gould, during the years 1922 to 1931 on specimens sent from the orchard to the Division of Fruits and Vegetable Crops and Diseases, or its antecedent pomological component unit where studies were made. Observations were recorded on but very few varieties for the entire 10-year period; more often they were limited to not over 4 to 6 seasons, or even a smaller number of years in many cases ... The numbers given for descriptions and paintings are the Pomology numbers under which the varieties illustrated were recorded in the Pomology Journal of Receipt (housed in the National Archives)."
H. P. (Harris Perley) Gould was born at North Bridgton, Maine, on September 6, 1871. He graduated from the University of Maine with a B.S. degree in 1893, and received his M.S.A. degree at Cornell University in 1897. From 1899 to 1901, he served as assistant entomologist and horticulturist at the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station. When the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) established the Bureau of Plant Industry in 1901, Gould joined the staff as assistant pomologist and was actively engaged in horticultural research and administration. He became head of the Division of Fruit and Vegetable Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, and served in this position for three years until his retirement in 1941. Gould died October 17, 1946 in Washington, D.C
